A second year of a global pandemic meant even more time spent in the kitchen. In 2021, the Chronicle published dozens of recipes and readers took full advantage of the collection.

Looking at the top 10 most popular recipes on HoustonChronicle.com provides some insight into what you were cooking. It’s a diverse round-up including comfort food, healthy meals and desserts. Chicken is, unsurprisingly, very present among the best hits. A burger and mac and cheese make expected appearances, and a couple cakes cater to the sweet-tooths.

Here are the recipes you cooked from the most this year, counting down to the most popular of all.

This year, whole-hog barbecue icon Rodney Scott of Charleston, S.C., published his first cookbook, “Rodney Scott’s World of BBQ: Recipes & Perspectives From the Legendary Pitmaster.” He shared some recipes with the Chronicle, including this one for decadent mac and cheese.

From the looks of this top 10, it seems many Chronicle readers could use a copy of  “The Chicken Bible,” a cookbook by America’s Test Kitchen. That’s where this recipe comes from. The chicken thighs are marinated in soy sauce, then braised in a coconut milk and cider vinegar mixture.

Drumroll… The most popular recipe of 2021 is this gorgeous cake by Bon Appétit contributor Claire Saffitz from her book “Dessert Person.” Everything from the layered cream cheese frosting to the addition of pecans in the carrot cake likely appealed to our readers.
